The film footage displayed here was discovered by Tricia Mack after a chance remark by a member of Leichhardt-Lilyfield Sub-Branch at the ANZAC Day Remembrance in 2004. The mention that a film had been shown during the war showing the destruction of Balmain Cemetery was riveting news for Tricia. She soon tracked down its whereabouts! This footage and photos are under copyright, Tricia has applied and received clearance to use same.
Where was this cemetery that opened in 1868 and closed in 1912 – a burial ground that accepted 10,608 interments? The cemetery is now the site of Pioneer Memorial Park in Norton Street. Balmain Cemetery of 11 acres fronted Derbyshire Road, bounded by William and Allen Streets and Norton Street, Leichhardt, NSW. Only tireless family historians appreciate the legacy of Balmain Cemetery, a legacy that will be available to all when Tricia Mack has finished her research on the cemetery.
